When we think of menopause, phrases like ‘hot flushes’ and ‘mood swings’ come to mind. Not many would associate hair loss with menopause, and yet it does happen and quite commonly too.

Treating hair loss during Menopause

While not as obvious as men’s hair loss, women experience general thinning of the hair instead of bald spots. Hair thinning in women can occur on any part of the head with large amounts of hair falling during brushing and / or showering.

Hair loss during this stage is a result of hormonal imbalance, as one might expect with menopause, specifically to lowered production of oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones are required for healthy hair growth and stay on the head longer, without them hair growth declines and hair becomes thinner. A lack of these hormones will also trigger an increase in the production of androgens, also known as a group of male hormones, which shrink hair follicles leading to hair loss. Sometimes these hormones may cause facial hair to grow on women which explains why menopausal women may suddenly sprout hair on their chins where there never was hair before.

Hair loss can cause one to lose confidence or feel self-conscious about themselves. Thankfully there are tips and treatments you can take to improve the quality of your hair.

#1 Reduce stress

Stress is another factor responsible for hair loss. Lowered oestrogen production can affect your brain chemistry, resulting in mood swings, anxiety and depression.

One of the most effective ways to reduce stress is to engage in regular exercise and breathing relaxation methods. Exercise promotes a sense of wellbeing and helps to develop a stronger body for yourself. Find an exercise you enjoy, which you can be sure to stick to and not view it as a chore.

#2 Eat well

You are what you eat, and the same goes for your hair. Ensure that your diet has a good balance of whole grains, fruits and vegetables in every meal. Drinking green tea and consuming vitamin B6 are known to restore hair health too.

A good intake of fatty acids found in salmon, tuna, flaxseed oils, walnuts and almonds will be helpful in maintaining hair health.

#3 Keep it natural

Stay away from tools such as heating thongs and hairdryers which can cause further damage to your hair. Hair extensions and hair dyes which may look nice for a while actually cause more damage to your hair in the long run, weakening your hair and causing further hair loss.

Let your hair grow naturally and give it a little TLC every now with a hair mask on top of using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair.

#4 Hair treatments

There are laser therapies specifically for the hair and scalp to rejuvenate thinning hair and encourage hair growth. Revage 670 is a low-level laser therapy emits painless cool laser energy directly to the scalp, stimulating blood flow to the hair follicles in the process, encouraging hair growth that is thicker and more supple.

A complementary treatment to Revage 670 would be Revitascalp, a targeted blast of scientifically selected ingredients including Minoxidil to reduce hair loss and increase hair density. No injections or needles are involved, just a comfortable penetration of hair-growth inducing ingredients to the scalp.
