I don’t think I’m too far from the truth when I say we are after some form of youth we can hold to for as long as we can, be it lush, thick dark hair, smooth skin or a svelte figure.

While aging is inevitable, we want to hold off the signs for as long as possible. Beyond your genetic makeup, there are more ways than one to help you maintain a youthful appearance.

#1 The sun is not your friend

It is common knowledge by now that the sun wreaks havoc on the skin and ages it far faster if we aren’t careful. Frequent exposure to UV rays from the sun can accelerate the aging process as they break down elastin in your skin, resulting in skin that is saggy, dull, wrinkly and uneven in skin tone.

Always be consistent with sunscreen application whether you are indoors or outdoors and don’t just stop at the first application in the morning. Do re-apply every few hours to keep your skin well protected throughout the day.

#2 Drink plenty of water

This is another not-so-secret secret that water is key healthy, youthful skin. For women that is about 2.7L of water a day while for men around 3.7L of water a day. Not getting enough water in your system can leave your skin looking dull and dry. Drinking sufficient water on the other hand replenishes your skin cells, promoting optimal skin health for that glow and radiance we all love.

#3 Get enough sleep

The term beauty sleep is not without some truth. As you sleep, your body is working hard to recover and promote cell turnover and renewal. This also makes it the ideal time to incorporate age-defying skincare ingredients into your beauty regime, such as retinoids and BHAs which are excellent for combating wrinkles and dull skin.

For an adult, anywhere from 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night is a decent number to aim for.

#4 Don’t scrimp on your moisturisers

Hydrate skin is healthy skin and while drinking enough water can help somewhat, why not give your skin an extra boost by using the right moisturiser.

There’s also the misconception that oily skin types do not require moisturisers. On the contrary your skin is crying out to be moisturised because it is dry and is working in overdrive to regulate oil production.

There is a moisturiser for every skin type, you just need to find the one that is suited for your skin types. Dry skin types can opt for thicker, creamier consistencies while oily skin types should look for moisturisers that are lightweight and won’t clog pores.

#5 Have a good routine

You know how the saying goes, “you’ll get it if you’re persistent; you’ll keep it if you’re consistent”. The same can be said with skincare. Establish a good skincare routine, one that you will stick to in order to reap the benefits in the months and years to follow.

Have a daily skincare routine that works for you and remember to include in weekly exfoliation sessions to help to get rid of unwanted dead skin cells that can build up on your skin.

Trust me, glowing, youthful skin awaits at the end of the rainbow if you simply follow these steps. For a professional’s opinion on how you can up your skincare game, you can always seek out a consultation with an aesthetic doctor at SW1 Clinic.
