Breast Reconstruction and Oncoplastic Surgery
Alongside chemotherapy, radiotherapy and mastectomy, reconstructive breast surgery is an integral component of cancer treatment – opening up a path towards positive psychological and physical rebuilding.
Breast reconstruction restores the balance, shape and feel of the breast after cancer removal surgery. The surgeries that your breast surgeon may offer to you include Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS) or Mastectomy.
BCS (or wide excision) removes part of the breast affected by cancer. Reconstruction after BCS, also known as oncoplastic surgery, will prevent distortion and restore balance to the breasts.
Mastectomy surgery involves the removal of the whole breast. Reconstruction after mastectomy rebuilds the breast form with your own tissue or a breast implant.
Reconstructive surgery of the breast is covered by Medisave and may be covered by your medical insurance.
Dr. Chia Hui Ling specialises in breast reconstruction surgery and is a co-founder of Breast Reconstruction Awareness Singapore (BRAS), a non-profit society which offers support and information to women who are considering cancer reconstructive surgery. The BRAS website provides useful information and details on breast reconstruction.
