4 Lasers that promise better skin
It seems the older we get, the more conscious and conscientious we get with our skincare. No doubt most if not all of us want to age the slowest possible way we can, hence all the effort but there’s a limit to how much skincare, no matter how good they are, can work wonders for our skin.
Thankfully a host of various laser treatments exist to bring skin quality up a notch, or two. But not every laser treatment works the same way nor are they suitable for everyone. That’s why if you are new to lasers and considering getting a treatment done, it’s imperative that you find a doctor who is not only experienced but also well-versed with the functions of all the laser treatments out there.

Here’s what you need to know about these lasers that are FDA-approved and will give you better skin.
#1 PicoSure
What it does: PicoSure addresses a wide range of common skin concerns such as pigment for example, freckles, sun spots, discoloration (and even unwanted tattoo ink!) as well as texture issues like scarring and wrinkles. PicoSure works by converting laser energy into gentle pressure waves to activate cell signalling and basically giving your skin instructions to create new collagen which will also help to fade away pigment.
Who is a candidate: All skin types are suitable for PicoSure. All colours of tattoo ink can be treated by PicoSure too.
What to expect during the procedure: Most people experience very little discomfort during a PicoSure appointment but you are really concerned about pain, you can opt to have numbing cream applied prior to the treatment. Most patients compare this treatment to a feeling similar to the snapping of a rubber band.
What to expect afterwards: It’s common to experience mild redness for a few hours after treatment but technically there’s no downtime and you can return to normal activities after treatment.
#2 Fraxel Light
What it does: Using Fraxel technology, Fraxel Light laser treatment is used to refresh and rejuvenate dull, tired skin, as well as correct any skin discolouration and improve skin texture. This microlaser peel helps to erase stubborn pigmentation and resurface skin for a more refined appearance. The laser energy from Fraxel Light also stimulates cell renewal and collagen production for firmer, healthier skin.
Who is a candidate: Due to the versatility of this treatment, it’s suitable for both younger patients looking to perfect their complexions and more mature patients looking to firm and tone up skin.
What to expect during the procedure: Most patients describe the treatment as a warm prickly sensation as the microlaser peel is gently sprayed across the treatment area. Patients can opt for numbing cream to maximise their comfort level.
What to expect afterwards: Flushing of the skin is expected post-treatment but this only lasts for a few hours. Some patients may also experience mild flaking of the skin 3-4 days after as part of the skin renewal process.

#3 VBeam Perfecta
What it does: VBeam Perfecta addresses a wide range of skin concerns, such as rosacea, port wine stains, acne, facial and spider veins, fresh scars, warts, stretch marks, and even sun aging.
Who is a candidate: This is suitable for literally anyone who wants to correct a skin condition.
What to expect during the procedure: This treatment is relatively painless. During the procedure, as pulses of light are applied to the skin, patients will feel a mild heating sensation. Treatment can take as little as 15-20minutes.
What to expect afterwards: There is usually no downtime at all with this treatment with most patients notice results right away and may even feel a firming or tightening of the treated area. For those who may experience downtime, there may be redness or mild swelling in the treated area immediately after which typically goes away in a few hours.
#4 Thermage FLX
What it does: Thermage FLX helps improve the appearance of sagging or loose skin, particularly in the eye area and jawline.
Who is a candidate: Anyone desiring to look younger without an overly drastic change.
What to expect during the procedure: When the treatment tip touches the skin, you will feel a brief cooling sensation, followed by a brief deep heating sensation. For patients sensitive to pain, there’s always the option to use anaesthetic cream. Thermage treatments generally take no more than 45 minutes for the eyes or face area and can last 90 minutes for larger body areas.
What to expect afterwards: You may experience mild redness on the treated areas but otherwise there’s very little downtime with this treatment. Most patients \ resume regular activities right after their appointments and do not require follow-up care. After just one treatment, the look of your skin will continue to improve for up to six months with results lasting years.
As with all laser treatments, it’s highly recommended that you avoid the sun and apply a good, thick layer of sunscreen daily.
