A personal journal by Dr Low Chai Ling

“I didn’t recognise myself in the mirror”

When I first became a mother, I expected exhaustion. I expected love.

But I didn’t expect to lose my glow. My skin looked dull. My hair fell in clumps. I had dark patches across my cheeks I’d never seen before.

And even as an aesthetic doctor – someone who had helped thousands of women through similar changes – I wasn’t prepared for how personal it would feel.

What pregnancy did to my skin, body, and hair

Skin

“I developed melasma that didn’t go away even months after giving birth.”

From a medical perspective, pigmentation after pregnancy is common. Hormones trigger melanin overproduction, leading to dark patches (melasma) that don’t always fade naturally.

Body

“The stretch marks didn’t bother me – until I couldn’t wear certain clothes without feeling self-conscious.”

Stretch marks form when skin expands faster than its collagen can adapt. While harmless, they can affect confidence.

Pro tip: Search for fractional lasers to collagen-stimulating devices for visible improvement.

Hair

“Postpartum hair loss hit me harder than I expected. It felt like I was still shedding parts of myself.”

Postnatal hair loss is linked to hormonal shifts after delivery. For most, it improves with time, but targeted treatments can strengthen regrowth and speed up recovery.

What I knew as a doctor – and what I did as a mother

I knew that pigmentation like melasma is hormone-triggered and notoriously stubborn.

I knew that sagging skin after birth and postnatal fat weren’t just about diet or exercise – they were structural changes beneath the skin.

I knew that safe, non-invasive options existed.

But as a mother, I didn’t want a checklist of fixes. I wanted a holistic plan that felt gentle, respectful, and realistic.

Creating Full Bloom: what I wish I had back then

That’s why I created the Full Bloom Program. I didn’t want women to feel like they had to piece together their recovery alone.

Full Bloom is a series of 6 pregnancy-safe facial sessions designed to support women through every stage of motherhood – from pregnancy to postpartum.

Each session is gentle, medical-grade, and safe for both mother and baby. The focus is on calming sensitivity, restoring radiance, improving circulation, and helping your skin feel alive again – without lasers, injectables, or harsh actives.

I wanted to create a space where you could feel taken care of – gently, safely, and without pressure to “fix” anything.
