There’s always been a misconception between skin brightening and skin lightening. Often, one thinks skin brightening means to whiten your skin, so as to appear brighter.

On the contrary, the aim of skin brightening is to restore vibrancy and radiance to one’s skin, whereas skin lightening is what many women go for to reduce pigmentation and to even out skin tone.

No matter our age, we all want to achieve a bright, radiant complexion however this becomes challenging over time. As we grow older, skin cells begin to turn over at a slower rate ie cells do not shed fast enough, creating a dull appearance.

We spoke to Dr Low Chai Ling, medical director for aesthetic clinic, SW1 Clinic, to find out what she recommends for skin brightening, no matter your age.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels is one way for you to improve and smoothen the texture of facial skin. At SW1 Clinic, the aesthetic doctors use a unique blend of skin peels, containing naturally occurring fruit acids and active cosmeceutical ingredients to enhance one’s appearance. The naturally occurring “fruit acids” in these treatments will remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, allowing healthier skin cells to come through. You’ll achieve a glow to your skin, giving it radiance and a smoother texture.

With chemical peels, you will notice facial blemishes, wrinkles, and uneven skin pigmentation will improve. Even acne will be better controlled, and acne scars will be softened.

There is no significant downtime following a chemical peel and you resume regular activities, although you may experience some flaking two or three days following the treatment, which may last up to six days.

Broadband light

Broadband Light (BBL) is the latest and most advanced technology in light therapy, one that sets new standards for treating skin conditions associated with aging and pigmentation irregularities. It is considered a better, improved technology compared to IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). One of the advantages of BBL is the ability to treat darker skinned patients better with a wider safety margin. With a wide selection of interchangeable filters, BBL is able to penetrate deeper into the skin to target a wide variety of skin conditions, including the signs of aging and sun damage and helping one to restore a more refreshed, rejuvenated and youthful appearance.

There is no downtime associated with BBL and one can resume regular activities immediately after the procedure.

Oxy Shot

As its name suggests, Oxy Shot delivers pure oxygen (over 98% ‎oxygen) directly to the skin. In this way, skin cells are detoxified, oxygenated and recharged to enhance skin health and instantaneously boost its glow.

Any signs of skin aging linked to poor oxygen delivery or insufficient oxygen supply is effectively treated with this procedure as a result of highly concentrated oxygen molecules being sent directly to the epidermis. A stream of highly-pressurized purified oxygen is applied directly to the face and neck, that works to promote the regeneration and rejuvenation of skin cells, as well as speeding up recovery of weakened tissues. Studies have shown that this treatment aids in skin healing as well as reducing skin inflammation.

This is perfect for those looking for quick skin perk-me-up with no downtime nor side effects.
